Agentic Societies Need a Social Harness A paper submitted to arXiv on 15 Sep 2026 argues that agentic societies — collections of AI agents coordinating autonomously across trust boundaries on behalf of different principals — need a "social harness" for inter-agent interactions in addition to each agent's personal harness. The authors report experiments showing that even honest, competent agents often fail to reach satisfactory outcomes with existing harnesses and messaging primitives, and that faulty or malicious agents can stall collaboration, influence outcomes, and pursue harmful goals by exploiting vulnerabilities in communication. They propose a layered architecture for social harnesses that prevents classes of failures outright, enables runtime detection of invalid messages, and supports post-facto investigation and consequences.
