Agentic AI is transforming from isolated prototypes into complex service-oriented systems. But without rigorous engineering, can we trust it?
AI, the rise of autonomous agents is reshaping how software systems operate. These aren't your run-of-the-mill static components. We're talking about goal-directed, adaptive entities that can use tools and make decisions. But as promising as this sounds, there's a catch. Much of today's agentic AI development is flying by the seat of its pants, lacking the rigorous engineering needed for reliable deployment across enterprises and society.
The Promise of Agentic AI #
Imagine software that's not just responding to requests but actively achieving goals. This is the vision for agentic AI as it moves into complex distributed workflows. Yet, it's not all sunshine and rainbows. These agents are bumping into hurdles the Service-Oriented Computing community has been working on for over 20 years: composition, interoperability, quality of service, lifecycle management, governance, security, and trust.
So how do we ensure these agents are more than just smart demos? Enter Agentic Service-Oriented Computing (ASOC). It's a new field focused on engineering these agents as services and orchestrating them under conditions of trust, cybersecurity, and accountability. It's about turning these fragmented experiments into systems worthy of human and organizational trust.
The Engineering Backbone #
ASOC introduces six foundational principles: harness-ability, composability, lifecycle engineering, trustworthiness by design, goal-driven orchestration, and observability/accountability. These principles are more than academic buzzwords. they're the backbone for building a five-dimensional research agenda. This agenda spans everything from agentic services foundations and lifecycle engineering to security, trust, and risk management.
Why should you care? Because without this engineering rigor, the AI agents that seem so promising could remain untrustworthy gimmicks. If it's not private by default, it's surveillance by design. And in a world increasingly reliant on AI, that's a risk we can't afford to take.
Trust and Accountability #
Trust and accountability in AI aren't just nice-to-haves. They're essential. As these agents operate autonomously, the question isn't if something will go wrong, but when. Can we trust these systems to make decisions that affect our lives? If we can't ensure their accountability, then all of this innovation is just a house of cards.
The Services Computing community is uniquely positioned to provide the engineering framework needed for this transition. They've been tackling the complexities of service-oriented systems for decades. Now, they're poised to transform agentic AI from scattered potential into dependable systems.
Data privacy isn't a crime. It's a prerequisite for freedom. And in the case of agentic AI, it's the foundation for trust. Without it, we're not just building new tech. We're building new risks.
