After Judge Hellerstein denies leave to amend to add 30,000 songs to case, Sony Music turns around and files a 2d lawsuit v. Udio alleging 30,000 songs infringed Sony Music Entertainment filed a second copyright lawsuit against Uncharted Labs d/b/a Udio on March 20, 2025, alleging the AI music company infringed over 30,000 additional songs. The lawsuit follows a March 3, 2025 order by Judge Hellerstein denying Sony leave to amend its original complaint to add those songs, mirroring a strategy used by Concord Music against Anthropic. Sony Music Entertainment just sued Uncharted Labs d/b/a Udio in a second copyright lawsuit to allege Udio infringed 30,000+ additional songs. The second lawsuit comes less than a month after Judge Hellerstein denied Sony leave to amend the complaint to add those 30,000+ additional songs. See his Order below: This strategy is similar to the one the music publishers Concord Music used against Anthropic: the plaintiffs filed a second lawsuit after being denied leave to amend the complaint in the first lawsuit. Now, both Concord Music I and Concord Music II are before Judge Eumi Lee, who denied the motion for leave. If the past is prologue, we should expect a similar development here.
