AMD's data center business is growing so fast that its ambitious 2030 goal might land in 2028, with ripple effects across AI compute and tokenized equity markets
When AMD CEO Lisa Su told investors the company would hit $100 billion in annual data center revenue by 2030, it sounded like the kind of stretch goal executives float to keep Wall Street interested. Turns out she may have undersold it.
AMD’s data center division posted $5.78 billion in revenue for Q1 2026, a 57% jump compared to the same quarter last year. At that growth trajectory, the company is on pace to blow past Su’s target roughly two years ahead of schedule, potentially reaching the milestone by 2028.
The AI engine behind AMD’s surge #
Su laid out the $100 billion annual data center revenue target during AMD’s Analyst Day in November 2025. The thesis was straightforward: AI infrastructure spending would keep accelerating, and AMD’s Instinct MI series GPUs and EPYC CPUs would capture a meaningful slice of that market.
Major deals with OpenAI and Meta have given AMD’s data center business serious momentum, placing its hardware at the center of the AI infrastructure buildout that every major tech company is racing to complete.
AMD’s crypto history and current connections #
Crypto veterans might remember when AMD was practically a mining stock. Back in Q1 2018, revenue from crypto mining accounted for roughly 10% of the company’s total sales.
That era is mostly over. The shift to proof-of-stake for Ethereum and the rise of specialized ASICs for Bitcoin mining have largely removed consumer GPUs from the mining equation.
But the company hasn’t entirely left the crypto ecosystem. AMD maintains a programmable Security Crypto Engine designed for cryptographic applications, keeping its hardware relevant for security-focused blockchain infrastructure. On the financial products side, Ondo’s AMDON token offers tokenized on-chain exposure to AMD’s equity performance, creating a bridge between traditional semiconductor investing and DeFi.
What this means for investors #
The risk side of the equation is worth considering. Semiconductor stocks are cyclical, and AMD’s Q1 numbers are impressive, but a single quarter of deceleration could reset expectations quickly. Any tokenized equity products tracking AMD would inherit that volatility.
There’s also the question of whether AMD can maintain its growth rate as the numbers get bigger. Going from $5.78 billion to the quarterly run rate needed for $100 billion annually, roughly $25 billion per quarter, requires sustained demand at a level the semiconductor industry has rarely seen.
