Aalo Atomics and AI infrastructure company Crusoe announced plans for a 2027 proof of concept at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) that would use an Aalo reactor to power a Crusoe Spark modular data center running Crusoe Cloud. The project is a proposed demonstration; it is not yet an operating commercial AI data center.
What the 2027 test would demonstrate
Crusoe's July 30 announcement says Aalo will initially power the modular Crusoe Spark system at INL in 2027. The companies frame the project as a direct demonstration of nuclear generation supplying AI compute infrastructure.
That initial test should not be confused with Aalo's larger commercial Pod design. POWER reports that Aalo-X is intended to prove the 10 MWe Aalo-1 reactor used in the planned Aalo Pod. A full Pod is a separate 50 MWe design comprising five 10 MWe reactors connected to shared power-generation equipment.
Aalo reported that its Critical Test Reactor reached criticality at INL on July 4 under the US Department of Energy's Reactor Pilot Program. The company says it has also begun work on a second reactor beside the test reactor, with the goal of producing electricity for an on-site data center in 2027. Those statements describe company plans and milestones, not independently measured commercial performance.
The 50 MWe rollout is a later plan
Beyond the INL proof of concept, Aalo and Crusoe said they intend to deploy 50 MWe Aalo Pods at Crusoe data centers by the end of 2029. The announcement does not make those future deployments operating assets today, and the timeline remains subject to engineering, regulatory, construction, and commissioning work.
For infrastructure teams, the useful output from the 2027 test would be operating evidence: delivered electrical output, uptime, load-following behavior, cooling and redundancy design, safety and licensing progress, and the integration between generation and modular compute. Until those results exist, the partnership is a defined demonstration plan rather than proof that small modular reactors are commercially ready for broad AI data center deployment.
