A leaked video shows Project Aion, a shelved Microsoft prototype that strips out the Start menu and taskbar entirely and replaces them with a Copilot-only shell that runs nothing but web apps.
Windows Central verified a roughly three-minute clip that surfaced on the BetaWiki Discord server, showing an operating system Microsoft never announced and, until now, never even hinted existed. It's called Aion, and it doesn't look like Windows at all.
Gone is the Start menu. Gone is the taskbar. In their place sits a multi-modal input box that opens straight into Copilot, which becomes the only way in or out of the system. You don't launch programs. You ask for them. Windows Central reports the build runs on an internal codebase called "Win3," a stripped-down version of Windows that drops support for traditional Win32 apps altogether.
That's a real sacrifice, not a cosmetic one. Without Win32 support, decades of desktop software simply won't run on it. Instead, Aion works only through web apps and websites, rendered inside a modified version of Microsoft Edge that uses Chromium's layout engine to power the whole interface. According to gHacks' reporting on the leak, that browser shell lets Copilot read a page's underlying code directly rather than just look at a screenshot of it, a technique known as DOM crawling. The other headline feature is called Spaces. It automatically clusters related apps, files, and browser tabs around whatever you're working on, so a research project or a client pitch becomes one saved cluster you reopen with a single click instead of five windows you have to hunt down. Windows Central and gHacks both describe it as functioning like an AI-curated Start menu, one built around tasks instead of app icons.

Nobody at Microsoft has said a word about it. Asked whether Aion is dead, shelved, or feeding into some other project, Microsoft declined to comment, according to Windows Central. The footage itself is believed to be around two years old, meaning Aion was likely built and tested well before Copilot became the fixture it is on Windows 11 today.
The Worst Possible Timing #
Timing is everything here, and Microsoft's timing could not be worse. Windows 11 has spent much of 2026 fighting its own users over Copilot. Microsoft was forced to walk back a plan to auto-install the Microsoft 365 Copilot app by default, after a backlash loud enough that The Cool Down described it as "Microslop" outrage in its coverage of the reversal. TechPowerUp later reported that Microsoft quietly resumed the same forced installs anyway, targeting completion by July 1. That's the pattern here. What This Actually Reveals #
Frankly, that's the real problem with this leak. It doesn't reveal that Microsoft dabbled in AI, everyone already knew that. It reveals how far the company was willing to go: an OS with no taskbar, no legacy apps, and no way to do much of anything except talk to Copilot first. That's not a feature bolted onto Windows. That's Windows rebuilt around Copilot as the operating system's entire reason for being.
Whether Aion ever ships is beside the point. Windows Latest, revisiting the leak on August 24, called it an OS "you'll hope stays buried," and that reaction says more about where Windows users are right now than anything in the video itself. Microsoft spent 2024 prototyping a future where Copilot is the desktop. Two years later, it's still trying to convince people Copilot belongs on the desktop at all.
That gap, between what Microsoft was willing to build behind closed doors and what it's struggling to sell in public, is the real story here. Aion may be dead. The appetite it was built to satisfy hasn't gone anywhere, on either side.
