68k Macintosh Ports

Developer Roy Tinker used Claude Opus 5.5 to reverse-engineer and port 68 classic 68000-based Macintosh programs from the 1980s and 1990s into native macOS apps, translating game logic to Swift or C+SDL while preserving original sounds and artwork. The ports, signed and notarized by Apple, require macOS 14 Sonoma or later, with "Universal" builds running on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs and others limited to Apple silicon; Flight Simulator 1.02 was the most complex, having been written mostly in hand-optimized 68k assembly with its own bytecode interpreter. Tinker describes the releases as unofficial preservation projects unaffiliated with the original rights holders.

Classic Macintosh software, rebuilt for modern macOS.

Each of these was a 68000 Mac program from the 1980s or '90s. With Claude Opus 5.5, I reverse-engineered each to the original language it was written in (approximately, anyway) and ported it to a native macOS app. Most render native menus (though FS 1.02 renders its own menus). The game logic is a translation of the original to Swift or C+SDL, and they use the original sounds and artwork. Most are extensively tested; the ones marked BETA are not fully tested yet (there will likely be a few glitches).

Flight Simulator 1.02 was by far the most complex. It was written mostly in hand-optimized 68k assembly. Because it was originally built to run on the original 512k and 128k Macintosh models, it needed to use memory extremely conservatively. So, like the Apollo mission computer, it uses its own hand-optimized bytecode interpreter. Graphics, scenery, and menus were rendered via hand-written routines in the internal bytecode.

macOS 14 Sonoma or later unless noted. “Universal” apps run on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs; the others need Apple silicon.

The apps are signed and notarized by Apple. Unzip one, drag it to Applications, and open it.

The original programs, their art, sounds and text belong to their authors and publishers. These ports are unofficial preservation projects and aren't affiliated with or endorsed by them. If you hold rights to one of these and want it taken down, email roy@roytinker.com.
