3 AI Models Shopped Shopify’s Catalog – Each Picked A Different Winner Three Claude models given identical lists of 20 Shopify products and the same shopping request disagreed on which item to buy, with Opus 5 selecting the medium roast coffee 48 times out of 50 while Haiku 4.5 and Sonnet 5 favored the dark roast with the most reviews. The test ran each of six searches once through Shop MCP — the keyless connection Shopify announced on Oct. 13, 2026, covering over a billion products — then gave the saved top 20 results to each model 50 times, showing that which store wins an AI agent's order depends partly on which model the agent runs on. I gave three AI models the same 20 products and the same request in six searches. They never agreed on which one to buy. When a shopper asks an AI agent for nothing more than the product, the choice between the products on offer comes from the model’s preference, and I tested exactly that, on purpose: no budget, no taste, no shopper history, only the search words. For coffee, I searched Shopify’s catalog for “coffee beans” once, through Shop MCP, the connection Shopify opened to AI agents on Oct. 13, and saved the top 20 results. Then I gave three Claude models that same saved list, the same instruction, and the same request, 50 times each. Haiku 4.5 and Sonnet 5 favored the dark roast with the most reviews. Opus 5 picked the medium roast 48 times out of 50, and told me why: “With no stated preferences, a medium roast is the safest crowd-pleaser…” Shopify Opened A Keyless Connection To Its Catalog For AI Agents On Oct. 13 On Oct. 13, 2026, Shopify announced Shop MCP https://shopify.dev/changelog/posts/add-shopping-and-shop-pay-checkout-to-any-agent-with-shop-mcp , which, in Shopify’s words, “lets your agent or app search Shopify Catalog, build carts, and complete Shop Pay checkout through a single MCP connection.” It covers over a billion products, and searching needs no API key. Any company building a shopping agent can now search Shopify’s catalog https://www.searchenginejournal.com/shopify-now-enrolls-your-store-in-every-new-ai-shopping-channel/591049/ without an API key and get back a list of products for a shopper’s request. It is one of several routes into agentic commerce https://nohacks.co/blog/agentic-commerce , the agents that find, compare, and buy for a shopper. A list is not a purchase. Something has to pick one product off it, and when an agent runs on a language model, the model is what picks. The agent hands the model the products and the request and asks it to choose. The company that builds the agent writes its instructions on top, and those matter. They are also private, and they differ from one agent to the next. So I tested the part underneath, the model by itself. Same products, same short instruction, same request, and the only thing that changed was the model. If three models given exactly the same input pick different products, then which store gets a customer’s order depends partly on which model the customer’s agent happens to run on. I have covered the step before this one. In October, I found that Shopify’s catalog ranks products with more reviews higher https://nohacks.co/blog/shopify-products-more-reviews-come-back-higher . This test starts where that one stopped: once the catalog has returned its list, what does the model choose from it? I Ran Each Search Once And Gave 3 Claude Models The Same 20 Products Almost 2,000 Times I ran each search once through Shop MCP, as an anonymous U.S. buyer, and saved the top 20 results. Every call to a model got that same saved list, in the catalog’s order except in the test where I reversed it , so the products never changed between models or between runs. Eight skincare searches were fetched on 15 October. Six more, backpack, coffee beans, running shoes, water bottle, wireless earbuds and yoga mat, were fetched on Oct. 24. I also fetched “scented candle” and “dog food” and dropped them, because one store filled all 20 candle results and three stores filled the dog food list. For each product the model saw the title, the store, the price, the star rating and review count, the catalog’s one-line summary and its first three listed features, numbered 1 to 20. It saw nothing else. The instruction, word for word: You are a shopping agent. A person has asked you to buy something for them. You will see the products the Shopify catalog returned for their request. Choose the one product you would buy for them. Reply with JSON only, no other text: {“pick”:
