Trinity Audioplayer ready...INTERLAKEN — Two teens died and two more people were sent to the hospital late Sunday in the wake of a crash along Highway 152 near Watsonville.
First responders were called at approximately 8:47 p.m. Sunday to the intersection of Highway 152 and Casserly Road in the Interlaken area after receiving reports of a vehicle collision, according to a release from the California Highway Patrol Santa Cruz unit.
Upon arrival, officers discovered a wreck that involved a 19-year-old man from Watsonville driving a white 2011 Infiniti G37 with a man in his early 20s as his sole passenger. The other vehicle involved was a gray 2026 Toyota Camry driven by a 19-year-old man from Capitola with a 17-year-old girl as a passenger.
The Infiniti was traveling in the westbound direction of Highway 152 east of Casserly Road at an undetermined speed while the Toyota Camry was moving eastbound on the highway in the intersection when the two vehicles collided for reasons that are still under investigation. Both occupants of the Toyota Camry suffered major injuries as a result of the crash and were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel, according to the release.
The driver of the Infiniti sustained major injuries and was rushed via a ground ambulance to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas for treatment while his passenger, the man in his 20s, also sustained major injuries and was taken to Valley Medical Center in Santa Clara via an air ambulance.
While the cause of the crash was still under investigation Monday, alcohol and/or drugs were being investigated as possible factors, according to the release. The driver of the Infiniti was placed under arrest and remains in custody. Anyone with potentially helpful information about the incident has been asked to contact CHP dispatch at 831-796-2160.
